OTTAWA, ON, Feb. 1, 2025 – Today, Catherine Cobden, President and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), issued the following statement in response to the newly announced tariffs on Canadian exports to the United States:
“The imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, including steel, entering the United States is deeply disappointing.
“Given the high degree of integration between the Canadian and US steel industries, with $20B in annual bilateral trade, these tariffs will severely disrupt our economies and cause significant hardship for businesses, workers, and their families on both sides of the border.
“We are also concerned that Canada’s substantial efforts to protect the North American market from unfair steel trade practices have been overlooked. From implementing melted and poured requirements to levying tariffs on numerous Chinese steel products, Canada has consistently demonstrated its commitment to combating industrial overcapacity and to being a strong partner with the United States in addressing unfair trade practices.
“In light of these new tariffs, the CSPA supports the Government of Canada’s swift retaliatory measures and other initiatives to aid Canadian industries. We will collaborate with the Government of Canada and provincial governments to secure support for our workers as we navigate this unnecessary and regrettable challenge.”
