OTTAWA, ON, Feb. 9, 2025 – Today, Catherine Cobden, President and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), issued a statement following President Donald Trump‘s announcement of planned 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States.

“The CSPA is deeply concerned by President Donald Trump‘s renewed threat of tariffs targeting Canada’s steel and aluminum sectors. While details remain unclear, a thorough analysis of the presidential order will follow its release.”

“The 2018 tariffs on Canadian steel caused significant disruptions and harm to both nations.

“Given the extensive integration of the Canada-US economy, with $20 billion in bilateral steel trade and the US sourcing 40% of its steel imports from Canada, this action is concerning.”

“Canada has actively worked to align its trade policies with the United States to protect both markets from unfair trade practices that threaten jobs and communities. For example, Canada implemented Section 53 tariffs on Chinese steel imports and monitors all imports to verify country of origin.”

“Targeting Canadian steel and aluminum is unjustified, necessitating immediate retaliatory action.

“We urge the Canadian government to resolutely counter this threat and implement retaliatory measures to mitigate the potentially devastating impact on our sector and workers.”
