Foreign Nationals Find Success in Chongqing Amid China’s Opening Up

CHONGQING, China, March 20, 2025 — According to an iChongqing report, the Western China International Communication Organization is presenting “China, An Opportunity Through Opening Up,” a series designed to showcase China’s significant advancements since its founding 75 years prior.

The series will present the stories of ten foreign nationals residing in Chongqing, highlighting their experiences and viewpoints within the dynamic metropolis.

Niccolo Chongqing’s General Manager, Nikolaos Chatzipetros of Greece, provides his perspective on Chongqing’s evolution into a global city, drawing from his experience in the upscale hotel sector. Canadian educator and author Jorah Kai Wood regards vibrant China as a wellspring of creative ideas.

Daiki Yamagami of Japan sees China as fertile ground for launching new ventures and expanding established businesses. Italian data expert Davide Liu asserts that the growth of athletic pursuits enhances the overall quality of life in China.

Dr. Tseng Hsien Cho, Associate Medical Director at Raffles Hospital Chongqing, originally from China’s Taiwan region and later a citizen of Singapore, has strong historical links to Chongqing. His background demonstrates a distinctive combination of personal and professional connections to the area.

Emily Hulme from the USA works as a teacher of English, stand-up performer, writer, and short filmmaker. Her diverse activities in Chongqing not only enrich her life but also instill in her a feeling of acceptance and community. Franco Bergamino, who owns an Italian dessert shop, believes that the sharing of culinary traditions encourages international understanding.

German architect David Nicolas Derksen finds Chongqing’s distinctive combination of culture and architectural styles to be very appealing. Elvira Maglalang, a Filipina English instructor, has become a key figure for the Filipino population in Chongqing, where she has been a resident since 2004.

Finally, Frank Stonier, an American professor at Southwest University, considers the city to be his “first hometown”. He has had a considerable influence on both education and the local community as a professor in the Faculty of Education and the Dean of the STEAM Interdisciplinary International Educational Research Center.

These accounts illustrate how these individuals have taken advantage of the possibilities presented by China’s modernization, playing a role in and observing the nation’s quick expansion and increased global engagement.
