This agreement positions Hughes as a comprehensive provider, offering a future roadmap that includes low-latency connectivity, multi-orbit coverage, and support for polar routes.
HAMBURG, Germany, April 8, 2025 — (Aircraft Interiors International 2025 Booth 2B70) — Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), a subsidiary of EchoStar (Nasdaq: SATS), has announced the finalization of an agreement with Airbus. This agreement designates Hughes as an official Managed Service Provider (MSP) within the HBCplus in-flight connectivity system. Hughes’ solutions will now be listed in the Airbus catalogue, giving airlines more connection options.
According to Reza Rasoulian, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Aviation Business Unit at Hughes, the partnership with Airbus on HBCplus enables airlines to have greater flexibility when creating top-tier connectivity experiences for passengers on Airbus aircraft. Rasoulian stated that Hughes committed to delivering its advanced network management and service provisioning capabilities directly to airlines less than a year ago. He added that airlines now have unprecedented options for dependable in-flight connectivity due to Hughes’ global Ka-band capacity across GEO satellites and its future plans for Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) integration and full polar coverage.
As part of the agreement, Hughes will join the HBCplus ecosystem as a full-service Ka-band managed service provider, while also continuing its role as a technology provider for satellite connectivity components. The Hughes HBCplus offering provides airlines with adaptable and scalable business models, as well as consistent and reliable connectivity, including plans to cover polar routes.
Tim Sommer, Head of Connected Aircraft at Airbus, stated that they are pleased to welcome Hughes into the HBCplus ecosystem. Sommer noted that passenger expectations for in-flight connectivity and digital services are constantly rising, and airlines require simple integration across their digital partner network. He believes Hughes will provide airlines with more options and enhance their multi-orbit strategy.
