Hyundai Mobis Inaugurates Integrated R&D Center in India, Aims for Global Software Hub Development

  • Hyundai Mobis has consolidated its two existing Indian R&D facilities into a single, larger hub with the goal of establishing a software strategy center with independent capabilities.
  • The company is advancing its three long-term R&D strategies by increasing the involvement of the new Indian center in upcoming R&D projects and broadening the range of models it will develop.
  • With the expansion of the local EV and SUV market, software is gaining importance, and the company aims to deliver comprehensive solutions to both local and global automakers.

SEOUL, South Korea, April 7, 2025 – Hyundai Mobis (KRX 012330) is set to expand its Indian R&D center, positioning it as a strategic hub for automotive software development. The center’s role in verifying and analyzing high-value, software-driven products is growing alongside their increasing sales.

Hyundai Mobis announced on April 7 the opening of a dedicated software R&D center in Hyderabad, Telangana, often called the Silicon Valley of India. Following the establishment of its first Technical Center of India in 2007, a second center was added in 2020. The newly integrated, large-scale R&D center is designed to accommodate the growing software R&D team and consolidate dispersed centers for enhanced synergy.

The new integrated R&D base, situated in the heart of Hyderabad, spans approximately 24,000 ㎡. Its location within a commercial area populated by global technology leaders facilitates the recruitment of top-tier software talent. The 10-story building includes research areas, data centers, labs, training rooms, partner workspaces, and break areas.

The company’s decision to establish the R&D base was influenced by the rapidly expanding Indian automotive market. According to a global research firm, India’s annual new car sales stand at 5.2 million vehicles, ranking third globally, and are projected to reach 6.2 million by 2028.

Notably, the Indian automotive market’s shift from small cars to SUVs and EVs is driving increased adoption of Level 2 autonomous driving features, such as large displays and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). In response, Hyundai Mobis is investing heavily in its Technical Center of India to establish it as a strategic hub for boosting global sales.

To achieve this, the company intends to develop the center into an R&D hub that enhances product cost competitiveness, performance, quality, and technology, leveraging its extensive software R&D personnel. Hyundai Mobis also plans to collaborate with vehicle software companies near its Hyderabad R&D center, fostering an external ecosystem and continuing its recruitment of skilled professionals.

The strategy involves transforming the Technical Center of India into a global software hub with independent business capabilities, using it as a base to deliver comprehensive solutions to global automakers.

Hyundai Mobis intends to broaden the scope of software R&D at the center by increasing its involvement from the initial stages of new product development, creating software for local vehicles, and prioritizing productivity improvements through the implementation of artificial intelligence.

“The Technical Center of India benefits from a large pool of developers, making it an ideal place for new R&D initiatives,” stated Jong-keun Lee, Head of Hyundai Mobis Technical Center of India. “Drawing on our nearly 20 years of experience in developing production vehicles, we will advance software capabilities and contribute to enhancing product competitiveness.”

Hyundai Mobis is currently accelerating the development of a hardware and software integrated platform that aligns with the trend toward software-defined vehicles (SDVs). This integrated platform is expected to become a one-stop solution that reduces development costs and simplifies the R&D environment for global customers by providing a customized system adaptable to different customers and vehicle segments.

In addition to its Korean R&D centers, including the Technical Center of Korea Mabuk and the Technical Center of Korea Uiwang, Hyundai Mobis operates overseas R&D centers in India, Germany, and China. This year, the company plans to establish a new semiconductor R&D center in Silicon Valley, USA, focusing on core autonomous driving technologies alongside its existing Hyundai Mobis Technical Center of North America in Detroit. The Frankfurt, Germany R&D center focuses on technologies for autonomous driving sensors, while the Shanghai, China center evaluates and improves the design of locally produced modules, brakes, and steering components.
