A Program to Aid Farmers in Livestock Identification

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 27, 2025 — JBS, collaborating with various partners, has announced a donation of 3 million livestock tags to improve cattle tracking in Pará, Brazil. The company also introduced a support program for farmers using these tags. These initiatives aim to expand a significant project led by the Pará state government, potentially transforming livestock management in Brazil. The objective: complete traceability of all cattle in Pará—home to Brazil’s second-largest cattle herd—by the end of 2026.

This announcement was made during the “From Davos to Belém: Defining Brazil’s Path to a Sustainable, Low-Carbon Cattle Industry” panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos. This program, already showing considerable progress in its first year, is a collaborative undertaking involving government entities, producers, civil society organizations, and industry leaders. “We are working together to transform the entire supply chain,” stated Gilberto Tomazoni, JBS Global CEO.

Of the 3 million tags, 2 million are specifically designated for small-scale producers, fulfilling about half of their projected 2025 tag requirements in the state. The Nature Conservancy (TNC), using funding from the Bezos Earth Fund, which pledged support at COP28, donated 2 million of these tags, while JBS provided the remainder.

In 2024, JBS conducted a pilot tagging program involving 28,000 head of cattle at its Marabá and Redenção facilities. This pilot tested the technology and ensured compliance with animal transport regulations. The findings were shared with coalition partners to aid large-scale implementation.
