OTTAWA, ON, June 13, 2025 – The Métis National Council is pleased to announce the release of “The Métis Life Project,” a game developed by Maskwa Games on Roblox, a leading gaming platform. The game aims to teach both children and adults Michif vocabulary and cultural traditions to ensure the Métis language and culture thrive in the modern era. Michif is the first Indigenous language to be featured and shared with a global audience on the platform.
The game was launched on June 2, 2025, and can be located by searching for it on Roblox. Through engaging, interactive lessons, players can delve into the world of Métis Life, learn Northern Michif (one of the three Michif dialects), and discover the Métis Nation’s culture and history. Roblox sees an average of 85.3 million users log in daily to create and play together.
As we explore new ways for people to connect and learn, it’s vital to reach young people on the platforms they use most. By connecting with them on platforms like Roblox, we have a significant opportunity to share history, values, and culture in ways that are interactive, meaningful, and community-focused.
President Pruden stated, “This is one way the MNC is helping to revitalize our Michif language. To ensure younger generations can practice and learn the language in an enjoyable way, and to prevent the loss of our beautiful Michif language, we must think creatively.” The MNC will continue its collaboration with Michif language keepers to add more words and Michif dialects to the game, supporting Indigenous language revitalization.
The United Nations has declared 2022-2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages to increase global awareness of the endangered status of Indigenous languages and to encourage action towards their preservation and revitalization. President Pruden said, “We hope that Métis children playing the game will begin using Michif outside the game and practice the language with their families and friends. This is an opportunity to celebrate Métis heritage and inspire curiosity in the next generation.”
Since 1983, the Métis National Council has represented the Métis Nation both nationally and internationally within Canada. The MNC advocates for the rights and interests of Métis Governments through national research and policy development, including the implementation of the Métis Nation’s inherent right to self-determination and self-government. The MNC is dedicated to maintaining accountability and transparency in its operations and in its relationships with its Governing Members and other partners.
