OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 22, 2024 – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued the following statement on National Housing Day:

“Canada’s housing market has been dysfunctional for decades. High construction costs and lengthy project timelines are the core issues.

“The federal government is addressing this by streamlining home construction. A key initiative partners with communities nationwide to accelerate building by incentivizing municipalities to expedite approvals, reduce bureaucracy, and enable faster development. This promotes housing near amenities and allows for increased density. We’ve already secured 178 agreements across the country to fast-track over 750,000 homes, and earlier this year, we increased funding to build over 12,000 new homes.

“Our efforts extend beyond this. [Program Name] is building affordable housing, renovating, and repairing existing units. [Program Name] supports builders in creating needed housing supply. Improvements to [Program Name] help first-time homebuyers save for down payments more quickly. To safeguard renters, we introduced [Program Name] to protect against unfair rent increases, renovictions, and negligent landlords. We are also combating chronic homelessness by creating supportive environments and providing vital services through [Program Name]. These are just some of our measures to tackle the housing crisis.

“All this is part of [Program Name], our comprehensive plan to build millions of homes. On National Housing Day, we reaffirm our commitment to this ongoing work.”
