A recent survey of 1,000 adults indicates that frequent cannabis consumers tend to snack more often and experience greater feelings of guilt, but they are also making increased efforts to select nutritious options.
TUSTIN, Calif., April 8, 2025 — Defying the stereotype of cannabis users favoring junk food, a new national survey reveals that nearly two-thirds of respondents report actively trying to make healthier choices when experiencing “the munchies.”
, a firm specializing in cannabis consumer research, found that 63% of adult cannabis users in the U.S. stated they “always” or “sometimes” aim for healthier snacks, with one in four expressing a stronger desire for fruits, salads, and smoothies.
According to Houman Shahi, Editorial Director at CBD Oracle, “There’s a common assumption that cannabis inevitably leads to indulging in junk food. However, the majority of users, particularly those who consume regularly, are making conscious efforts to snack in a more health-conscious way. The concept of a ‘health-conscious stoner’ is valid, and our data supports this.”
CBD Oracle’s survey, involving a representative sample of 1,000 cannabis users nationwide, explored their experiences with “the munchies.” The results showed that, alongside an anticipated increase in snacking, 63% attempt to opt for healthy snacks – a figure that rises to 71% among daily users.
Concerns regarding diet and nutrition appear to be significant, as the study also highlighted that:
- 53% believe that experiencing the munchies makes it more challenging to achieve their weight management and nutritional objectives.
- 43% feel remorseful following a snack binge triggered by cannabis use.
- On average, users spend approximately $10 per session on snacks to satisfy their munchies.
Regular cannabis users are particularly affected, with three-quarters indicating that they frequently or always experience the munchies, in contrast to less than a third of those who consume cannabis less than once a month. Consequently, daily smokers may spend $70 or more per week on food to satisfy these cravings.
While many adhere to typical snack choices, such as pizza, chips, and ice cream, some users explore more unusual options. When asked to share the most peculiar food they had consumed while under the influence of cannabis, many recounted instances involving excessive pickle consumption, including combinations with chocolate syrup, peanut butter, and frosting. One individual even admitted to eating a 30-year-old collectible Reggie Bar while high.
