BEIJING, January 15, 2025 — In Yiwu, David W. Ferguson, honorary chief English editor at Foreign Languages Press and author of China’s Development in the New Era – the Zhejiang Experience, observed many remarkable occurrences.
A vendor at the Yiwu International Trade Market prompted him to ask, “Why is this clearly intelligent and accomplished young woman, holding degrees in finance and accounting, and a master’s in economics, selling soft toys from a market stall in Yiwu?”
This young woman, who spent her childhood at the market, studied in the UK from age 16. After completing her master’s degree, she returned to the family business at the market. Her family, along with tens of thousands of other entrepreneurs in Yiwu, has helped create the world’s largest small commodities market.
Zhejiang International Communication Center (ZICC) and Foreign Languages Press have jointly released the first episode, Decode China: the Incredible Yiwu Market, featuring Ferguson sharing the Yiwu story. More episodes to follow.
