Zambia’s Tech Ministry and Huawei Unveil Smart Village Initiative, Exploring Digital Transformation for Rural Areas

BARCELONA, Spain, March 8, 2025 — At MWC Barcelona 2025, the Ministry of Technology and Science of Zambia and Huawei together presented Zambia’s smart village as a global example. This occurred at the government industry forum, Secured, Sovereign & Synergized Network-Cloud Strategy Accelerating National Digitalization. The event hosted over 200 industry leaders and tech experts in public services, who discussed how digital technologies can drive national progress.

In July 2024, Zambia’s first smart village was successfully established in just 30 days. The project delivered electricity and Internet, enabling telemedicine and remote learning for the community.

Governments around the world are increasing their focus on AI to improve public services. Huawei’s Vice President and CEO of Global Public Sector BU, Li Junfeng, stated that digital transformation in government is key to boosting national capabilities and citizen well-being. He highlighted AI’s role as a major catalyst in this shift. The widespread adoption of the DeepSeek model represents significant technological advancement and a fundamental change in how things are produced. Huawei is working with global partners to leverage these opportunities and advance digital government towards a smarter, more sustainable future.

At the forum, Huawei’s Global Chief Public Services Industry Scientist, Koh Hong-Eng, led discussions on national digital transformation with various guests. Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, Felix C. Mutati, noted that the Smart Villages Project is in line with Zambia’s Vision 2030. He emphasized that smart education is empowering the next generation with knowledge and equipping them with the digital skills needed for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He added that Zambia’s digital transformation is about technology, people, progress, and potential, aiming to empower communities, reduce inequalities, and create a future where every Zambian can contribute to national development.
