ZHONGSHAN, China, Dec. 29, 2024 — A report from Zhongshan Daily & Zhongshan International Communications Center:
At 3:00 AM in Gangkou, Zhongshan, Jerry, a Zhongshan resident originally from Australia, observes the commencement of a unique journey at China’s largest fresh aquatic product production center supplying Macao. A live fish will travel from a Zhongshan fishpond to a Macao dining table within hours, showcasing the strong collaboration within the Greater Bay Area.
Zhongshan and Macao share historical ties as parts of Xiangshan County. Approximately 150,000 Zhongshan natives currently reside in Macao. Zhongshan has been a significant agricultural supplier to Macao, a relationship predating Macao’s return to China. The handover of Macao to Chinese sovereignty on December 20, 1999, marked a pivotal moment in the city’s development.
Jerry will trace the fish’s route from a Zhongshan fishpond to a Macao dinner table.
Zhongshan’s abundant aquatic resources, located at the confluence of freshwater and saltwater, generate an annual output exceeding 9 billion yuan. These safe, plentiful, and efficiently produced live aquatic products account for approximately 70% of Macao’s market. For instance, Zhongshan Shuichu Group (Zhongshan Foodstuffs & Aquatic IMP. & EXP. Group Co. Ltd.) has supplied freshwater fish, including Zhongshan specialties like crispy grass carp, bighead carp, and mud carp, to Macao and Hong Kong for almost 70 years.
Over a dozen Zhongshan businesses supply goods to Macao. In the 25 years since Macao’s return to China, Zhongshan Customs has overseen the delivery of substantial quantities of essential goods to Macao, including roughly 400,000 live pigs, 105,000 tons of aquatic products, and 285,000 tons of fresh vegetables.
This journey highlights the seamless integration of Greater Bay Area cities. The swift transport of live fish from a Zhongshan pond to a Macao table underscores this connection. Jerry anticipates the continued growth of the Macao-Zhongshan relationship.
