Ahead of further talks, Trump insists Iran must abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions.

President Trump reiterated on Monday that Iran must relinquish any aspirations of acquiring nuclear weapons, as the U.S. prepares for further discussions in less than a week.

“Iran must abandon the concept of possessing a nuclear weapon. They cannot have one,” Trump stated to reporters in the Oval Office, while accompanied by the president of El Salvador.

“Iran desires to engage with us, but they are uncertain about how to proceed,” Trump added.

The president confirmed that the U.S. will hold additional talks next Saturday in Italy, a week following the initial discussions in Oman.

Details of the discussion are scarce, although they are regarded as a starting point as Washington aims to negotiate with Tehran to halt its nuclear program.

Iranian state media reported that Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had a “brief conversation” during the two-hour meeting, suggesting a positive view from Tehran given their initial reluctance to hold “direct” talks.

The White House also characterized the talks as “very positive and constructive,” while acknowledging that “very complicated” issues persist.

Trump has stated that negotiations with Iran need to occur “very quickly” but hasn’t specified how long he will allow the diplomatic process before considering military options.

The president has repeatedly threatened to “bomb” Iran if it doesn’t cease its ambitions to develop nuclear weapons.

The extent to which the U.S. intends to dismantle Tehran’s nuclear program remains unclear, with some advocating for complete disarmament as Iran continues to advance its missile programs.

“I’ll resolve that issue. It’s relatively straightforward,” Trump told reporters, comparing ending Iran’s decades-long nuclear ambitions to resolving Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“I believe Iran has the potential to be a great nation, provided it doesn’t possess nuclear weapons,” Trump stated. “If they possess nuclear weapons, they will never have the chance to become a great nation.”
