Franklin Graham Hails Trump Administration’s ‘Very Generous’ Response to Deadly Myanmar Earthquake

Following a devastating earthquake in Burma (Myanmar), Franklin Graham, head of Samaritan’s Purse, commended the Burmese government’s quick response and expressed optimism about significant U.S. aid under President Trump.

“America has always been generous,” Graham told Digital.

He added, “President Trump supports aid, but not wasteful spending, which has been an issue in the past. I anticipate his response will be very generous.”

Graham also spoke about the president’s personal experiences, saying, “I believe God saved his life,” referring to the assassination attempt in Butler, Pa. “The president also believes this, and we need to pray for his continued protection, as many wish to harm him.”

Samaritan’s Purse has already started performing surgeries in Naypyidaw, Burma’s capital, which is situated between Yangon and Mandalay, two of the worst-hit areas. They are operating from a soccer stadium provided by the Burmese government, which is also offering full support, including visa approvals and access to facilities.

Graham stated that Samaritan’s Purse initially set up 60 beds and two operating theaters. The government added 24 beds via medical container units (connexes), including one operating room, bringing the total to 84 beds and three operating theaters. “The rest of the hospital arrives tomorrow… we should be fully operational by the day after tomorrow,” he said.

According to the organization’s press release, Samaritan’s Purse is establishing a complete with an emergency room, laboratory, pharmacy, critical care unit, and two permanent operating rooms. Almost 100 earthquake victims were awaiting surgery upon the team’s arrival.

Graham stressed the importance of speed, saying, “After a deadly earthquake like this, speed is essential. We are thankful to already be performing surgeries while the full field hospital is still being built.”

One of the first patients was a woman who protected her son during a building collapse. “She covered her son to protect him,” Graham shared. “She had spinal issues requiring surgery, and she is now recovering well.”

With over and thousands more injured or missing, the humanitarian need is substantial. “People are lined up seeking help, but there is a lack of assistance,” Graham said. “This region is impoverished and desperate, and recovery will take years, if it’s even possible.”

Samaritan’s Purse transported over 104 tons of crucial supplies, including six water filtration systems, hygiene kits, emergency shelter material, and solar lights, on a 747 cargo plane from Greenville, South Carolina. Currently, more than 80 Disaster Assistance Response Team members are in Burma, with more on the way.

The organization’s logistical capabilities were crucial. “We maintain a stock of these supplies in our warehouses in North Carolina, allowing us to quickly load and transport them,” Graham said. He also noted that the hospital will require regular resupply, with planes departing from Greensboro to Myanmar approximately every 10 days.

Temperatures in the region exceed 110°F with high humidity. The team lives in tents and works in challenging conditions. “We are self-sufficient, providing our own accommodations, water, and electricity, but it is a demanding assignment,” Graham said.

Despite the difficulties, the team remains dedicated. “They are holding clinics during the day and performing surgeries at night. Our team is motivated and excited to serve the people of Myanmar in the name of Jesus Christ.”

Samaritan’s Purse has previously worked in Burma, responding to Cyclone Nargis in 2008 and maintaining a country office from 2017 to 2022.

“We need prayer, first and foremost,” Graham stated. “And, of course, we always need financial support. This is a very long way from home.”

“We want every patient to know that God loves them and that they are not alone. Please pray for everyone affected and for our Disaster Assistance Response Team as they serve those who are hurting in Jesus’ Name,” Graham added.
