German Conservative Leader Aims for Independence From U.S.

Friedrich Merz, the leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union, a center-right party, has stated that his primary objective upon assuming leadership will be to strengthen Europe, enabling it to achieve independence from the United States.

According to reports, Merz expressed surprise at needing to make such a statement, referencing recent remarks that suggested the current U.S. government disregards the fate of Europe.

Merz emphasized his commitment to rapidly strengthening Europe to gradually achieve independence from the U.S.

These remarks from the incoming chancellor, previously considered a strong supporter of transatlantic relations, are significant as they may indicate a major shift in the post-World War II relationship between the U.S. and Europe.

Merz also expressed concerns about the future of NATO “in its current form” and suggested European nations may need to establish their own defense structures more quickly, according to the BBC.

Mike Waltz, Trump’s national security advisor, recently reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to its NATO allies and Article 5, while also urging European allies to increase their defense spending, echoing the U.S.’s long-standing demand.

Concerns have also risen about the potential withdrawal of U.S. troops stationed in Europe, especially after Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth noted that while there are no immediate plans for withdrawal, NATO allies shouldn’t assume America’s presence will be permanent.

European leaders have increasingly sought a unified message from the Trump administration regarding its intentions.

These concerns were heightened after a conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, followed by a meeting between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart in Saudi Arabia, which revealed the administration’s efforts to restore diplomatic relations.

Trump’s criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also drawn international criticism. Washington’s position on securing a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is expected to be a major topic of discussion this week as French President Emmanuel Macron and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer travel to Washington to meet with Trump.

Merz, seemingly aiming to restore Germany’s prominence in geopolitics, affirmed his support for Ukraine.

In a post on X, he highlighted the three-year anniversary of Russia’s war against Ukraine, emphasizing the ongoing destruction and war crimes, and reiterating Europe’s unwavering support for Ukraine.

Merz stressed the need to empower Ukraine for a just peace, insisting that the attacked country must be included in peace negotiations.
