In the wake of a deadly shooting in Kashmir that killed 26, India is promising to hunt down terrorists “to the ends of the earth” as tensions rise with Pakistan.
At a public rally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist, along with those who support and enable them.
He reportedly added, “We will pursue them to the ends of the earth.”
Tuesday’s attack, which targeted civilians visiting a popular scenic meadow, was the deadliest in years in the troubled region that has experienced an anti-India insurgency for over three decades. According to Reuters, gunmen killed 26 people and injured 17.
While the Indian government has not presented public evidence directly linking the attack to Pakistan, it stated that the attack had “cross-border” connections. Pakistan has denied any involvement, and a militant group calling itself the Kashmir Resistance has claimed responsibility.
Indian authorities announced Thursday that all visas issued to Pakistani citizens would be revoked, effective Sunday. Pakistanis currently in India must leave before their visas expire, based on the revised timeline. The country also announced measures to reduce diplomatic staff and close the only operational land border crossing between the two nations.
Subsequently, Pakistan closed its airspace to all Indian-owned or operated airlines and suspended all trade with India, including trade to and from third countries.
Pakistan’s National Security Committee also condemned India’s “belligerent measures,” asserting that while Pakistan remains committed to peace, it will not allow any infringement upon its “sovereignty, security, dignity and inalienable rights.”
President expressed his “deepest sympathies” on Tuesday following the attack.
“Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir,” Trump posted on his TRUTH Social account. “The United States stands strong with India against Terrorism. We pray for the souls of those lost, and for the recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Modi, and the incredible people of India, have our full support and deepest sympathies. Our hearts are with you all!”
