Kidnapped American Pastor Rescued in South Africa After Fatal Police Encounter

An American pastor who had been kidnapped in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province was rescued Tuesday during a fatal shootout with police at a residence in KwaMagxaki, Gqeberha.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS) stated that an operation conducted by their agency led to the successful rescue of the kidnapped American pastor.

While the press release did not identify the pastor, Josh Sullivan, 34, from Tennessee, was abducted at gunpoint last week from his church in the Eastern Cape by several masked individuals.

Police, acting on tips, located Sullivan at a safe house in KwaMagxaki, Gqeberha. Upon arrival, suspects inside a vehicle on the property opened fire on law enforcement and attempted to escape.

A fierce gun battle ensued, resulting in the deaths of three unidentified suspects.

Sullivan was discovered inside the same vehicle as the suspects, unharmed, according to police, who added that he is in excellent condition.
