French President Emmanuel Macron warns that Iran’s nuclear program is approaching an irreversible point.
Macron recently identified Iran’s nuclear program as the foremost strategic and security challenge facing France and Europe this year. He stated that the program’s acceleration is pushing it toward a point of no return.
Macron also indicated that consideration is being given to using the mechanism for restoring sanctions in the coming months.
These comments follow International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi’s announcement that Iran is enriching uranium to nearly weapons-grade levels (90%).
French, German, and British diplomats are scheduled to meet with their Iranian counterparts on January 13th in an attempt to ease tensions, according to Reuters.
Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
Axios recently reported that President Biden was briefed approximately one month ago by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan on potential military options if Iran moves to develop a nuclear weapon.
While President Biden has pledged to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon during his presidency, the precise actions that would trigger a direct military response remain unclear, especially given Iran’s reported stockpiling of near-weapons-grade uranium and advancements in weaponization capabilities.
The president reportedly reviewed various scenarios and response options, though sources indicated that no final decisions have been made.
Another source reportedly told Axios that there are currently no active discussions on military strikes.
