Senior military leaders from around the world are convening to develop a plan for a peacekeeping force in Ukraine, spearheaded by a “coalition of the willing” led by the U.K. and France.
While the U.K. and France are the only nations within the coalition explicitly stating their willingness to deploy troops, countries like Canada, Australia, Finland, and others in Europe are reportedly considering involvement, according to the AP. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently indicated that the coalition is moving into its “operational phase.”
The exact number of troops to be deployed remains unclear, but the AP cites officials estimating a range between 10,000 and 30,000.
President held separate discussions this week with Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“He reiterated that all must work together to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position to secure a just and lasting peace,” a spokesperson for Starmer said, referring to the conversation with Trump.
Macron also mentioned speaking with Ukrainian President , praising his “courage” in accepting the U.S. deal.
“We must now move forward with all our partners to present a concrete peace plan. A peace plan that provides strong security guarantees for Ukraine. A peace plan that ensures lasting peace in Ukraine and Europe. A peace plan that prevents Russia from attacking again,” Macron stated in a post on X.
Russia has opposed the presence of troops from NATO countries in Ukraine as part of this agreement, according to the AP.
Throughout the war, the Kremlin has consistently expressed its opposition to Ukraine joining NATO. Earlier this week, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko reiterated this stance in a Russian publication. Reuters reported that Grushko stated the Kremlin’s demand for an “ironclad” guarantee that Ukraine would not become a NATO member.
Trump, who has pledged to end the three-year war, also spoke with Zelenskyy and Russian President this week. In a Truth Social post, Trump described his call with Zelenskyy as “very good” and mentioned discussing his conversation with Putin.
“Much of the discussion was based on the call made yesterday with President Putin in order to align both Russia and Ukraine in terms of their requests and needs,” .
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt provided details about the call between Trump and Putin in a statement, noting their agreement that the war “needs to end with a lasting peace.” Trump and Putin also reportedly discussed the need to improve relations between the U.S. and Russia.
