Authorities have removed over 400 migrants from a Paris theater where they had been illegally residing for over three months.
Reports indicate that police used tear gas initially; however, the evacuation proceeded largely peacefully, according to Reuters.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, as quoted by Reuters on France Inter radio, stated that the evacuation was necessary due to the increasingly complex, tense, and dangerous conditions inside the theater.
French police made over 46 arrests during Tuesday’s operation, according to reports. It remains unclear if all those arrested were migrants, as clashes occurred between police and activists supporting the squatters.
Paris Police Prefect Laurent Nuñez stated that some individuals were arrested for “rebelling” during the evacuation, while others were detained for “administrative checks.” Reports also indicate that Nuñez characterized the migrants’ occupation of the Gaite Lyrique theater as a threat to “public order.”
A banner displayed outside the theater stated, “400 lives in danger, 80 jobs under threat.”
The Gaite Lyrique Theater was compelled to halt its operations in December, shortly after the migrants occupied the premises, demanding food and shelter. Gaite Lyrique reportedly criticized authorities for their “inaction” regarding the situation, according to reports.
