Pope Francis’ Condition ‘Fine,’ Not Life-Threatening, Doctors Assure “`

Doctors in Italy announced Friday that Pope Francis “is fine” and his condition is not life-threatening, though he is expected to remain hospitalized for at least the next week.

Gemelli hospital Dr. Sergio Alfieri and Pope Francis’ personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, spoke as the 88-year-old pope deals with pneumonia on top of chronic bronchitis.

“The pope is fine,” Dr. Alfieri told reporters Friday, mentioning that Francis instructed him and Dr. Carbone to provide the update.

Dr. Alfieri also stated that the Pope is receiving the standard treatment for his condition.

The Pope is receiving supplemental oxygen as needed and is responding well to the intensified drug therapy aimed at combating pneumonia and a complex lung infection, according to his medical team.

Pope Francis is battling a multifaceted bacterial and viral infection in his respiratory system.

Doctors clarified that there’s no indication the infection has entered his bloodstream, a condition called sepsis, which would be a major concern due to its potential to cause organ failure and death.

Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Feb. 14 after his bronchitis worsened.

reported late Thursday a “slight improvement” in Pope Francis’ overall clinical condition, noting that his heart is functioning properly.

“The night was restful, and Pope Francis woke up this morning and had breakfast,” the bulletin stated Friday.
