Pope Francis’ Condition Improves; Receives Visit from Italian Prime Minister

Pope Francis showed slight improvement in his condition while recovering from pneumonia on Wednesday. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited him, reporting that he was alert, responsive, and in good spirits.

Meloni conveyed well wishes from the Italian government and people. Her visit lasted 20 minutes, according to the Vatican.

She described him as maintaining his usual sense of humor.

Meloni was the first person outside his medical team to see Francis since his hospitalization at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where popes have a dedicated suite.

The Vatican confirmed Francis’s improved condition, stating that his clinical status was stable and blood tests indicated a slight improvement, particularly in inflammatory markers.

Following breakfast, he read newspapers and worked with his close aides. He also received communion before lunch.

Francis’s vicar urged followers to hold a silent hour of prayer for him before evening vespers.

Some visitors to the hospital lit candles in his honor. One visitor, Sister Charlene from Singapore, noted the widespread concern and the importance of prayer for his health.

The pope has a history of health challenges, including a lung removal at age 21 due to pleurisy. He has also faced various health issues in recent years, including surgeries in 2021 and 2023, and ongoing knee problems requiring wheelchair use.
