Shortly after his election, Pope Francis expressed his wishes regarding his burial arrangements.
He was chosen as Pope in March 2013 by the College of Cardinals after Pope Benedict XVI resigned due to health issues.
According to constructive theologian Neomi DeAnda, Pope Francis believed his papacy might be short. “He was already in his 70s when he was elected pope, and he wanted to be prepared when God called him home,” she told Digital.
DeAnda, an expert in Latin American studies and the role of Mary in Latin America, holds advanced degrees in theology from Loyola University Chicago, the Oblate School of Theology, and St. Mary’s University in Texas.
DeAnda noted, “He didn’t anticipate such a long papacy, given his age at the time of his election. He wanted to ensure his wishes were known.”
Pope Francis chose the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore as his final resting place.
DeAnda explained to Digital, “It holds significance because his grandparents, who immigrated to Argentina with his father, are believed to have lived near and frequented the Basilica.”
Pope Francis made his first public appearance as Pope at the Basilica on March 13, 2013.
DeAnda added, “It’s his favorite place to visit. He always prays there before embarking on a trip.”
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, born in Argentina, was the first Pope from the Americas.
His autobiography recounts how his family fled fascism in Italy and sought refuge in Argentina.
DeAnda shared a story about Pope Francis’ father and grandparents: “They missed their intended ship, the SS Principessa Mafalda, because they couldn’t sell all their belongings in time.”
DeAnda further explained that the ship the family intended to travel on later sank.
“His grandparents could have perished on that ship,” DeAnda said. “Their survival allowed for Francis and his ten siblings to be born.”
The Vatican announced that Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, the day after Easter Sunday.
