Post-Surgery, Netanyahu Defies Doctors’ Advice, Attends Knesset Vote “`

Despite medical advice following prostate surgery on Sunday, 75-year-old Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended a crucial budget vote in the Knesset (Israeli parliament) on Tuesday. Accompanied by his personal physician, Dr. Tzvi Berkowitz, Netanyahu appeared in good health for a brief appearance. The surgery, necessitated by a urinary tract infection stemming from an enlarged prostate, was reported as successful.

The “Trapped Profits Law,” which would tax corporate earnings previously exempt to encourage investment, faces potential failure. Two coalition parties, threatening to vote against it, are demanding concessions.

The United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party, holding seven Knesset seats, opposes the bill unless legislation exempting Haredi (Orthodox Jewish) citizens from military service advances. This exemption is a contentious issue following a High Court ruling deeming existing exemptions illegal.

Similarly, the Otzma Yehudit party, also with seven seats, is dissenting. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir demands increased budgets for police, prisons, and firefighting before supporting the bill.

Netanyahu’s coalition holds 68 of 120 Knesset seats. Failure to pass the budget by March 31st will trigger national elections.

Netanyahu’s office announced the Sunday surgery’s success. He’s undergone several procedures in the past two years, including a procedure under full anesthesia in March and pacemaker implantation in July following dehydration. His recent surgery coincided with his ongoing testimony in a corruption case.

Concurrently, Netanyahu leads the IDF in operations targeting Iranian-backed groups, including recent strikes in Yemen alongside U.S. Central Command forces. These strikes aimed to degrade the Houthis’ ability to threaten regional partners and shipping.
