Rubio affirms US commitment to Taiwan will not waver during China trade talks.

On Sunday, the Secretary of State reiterated the enduring U.S. commitment to Taiwan, emphasizing that the island would not be forsaken amidst trade discussions with China.

During his journey between Israel and Qatar, on his way to meet the President in Asia, Rubio informed reporters that Taiwan had no reason to worry regarding the trade talks.

Rubio stated, “I do not anticipate a trade agreement where, should people’s concern be that we would secure a trade deal or preferential trade terms by disengaging from Taiwan, that is not happening.” He added, “Such a scenario is not being considered by anyone.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping has intensified efforts to compel the U.S. to alter its one-China policy, which acknowledges Taiwan as Chinese territory while also preserving ties with the island.

Beijing has urged the Trump administration to formally adopt language stating that it “opposes” independence, a modification that would constitute a significant diplomatic triumph for China, given Washington’s present stance of “not supporting” independence.

Taiwan stands as a pivotal concern within China’s relationship with the U.S., alongside other contentious matters including trade, technology transfers, and human rights.

While the U.S. serves as Taiwan’s primary military supporter, Trump has suggested that the island ought to bear the costs of its own security.

En route to Asia aboard Air Force One, Trump refrained from responding to inquiries concerning U.S. policy regarding Taiwan.

Trump informed reporters, “I prefer not to discuss that at this moment. I wish to avoid introducing further complications. The journey is already sufficiently intricate.”

The U.S. president is slated to meet Xi the following week during a regional summit in South Korea; this will be the first encounter between the two leaders since Trump’s return to the White House in January.

Trump’s Asian itinerary encompasses visits to Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea.
