Trump Says Houthis Surrender, US to Halt Bombing Campaign

President Trump stated on Tuesday that the U.S. would cease its bombing campaign against the Houthis in Yemen, citing the group’s claim that they “don’t want to fight.”

“They just don’t want to fight,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “They just don’t want to, and we will honor that. We will stop the bombings.”

Trump indicated that the cessation of bombings would be “effectively immediately.”

Secretary of State further clarified that the primary “job” was to halt attacks on ships in the region.

“If that’s going to stop, we will stop,” he stated.

Trump described the development as “very good news” received the previous night from an undisclosed “very good source.”

“They have capitulated,” the President claimed, adding that the U.S. would “take their word.”

“They say they will not be blowing up ships anymore. And that’s what the purpose of what we were doing,” he said regarding the U.S. aerial operations.

U.S. Central Command reported on April 27 that the U.S. had struck approximately 800 Houthi targets since mid-March.

This announcement coincides with reports of Israel escalating actions on the Houthis in northern Yemen, particularly in Sana’a, the Houthi-controlled capital.

Trump did not elaborate on how the U.S. plans to address Iranian support for the Houthi network moving forward.
