Building Homes for Heroes and Hillwood Properties collaborated to donate a landmark home in Dallas, Texas
NEW YORK, December 7, 2024 — Building Homes for Heroes today celebrated a significant achievement: the presentation of its 400th home to U.S. Army Specialist Joshua Sager and his family in Argyle, Texas, a suburb north of Dallas. This accomplishment reflects nearly two decades of providing veterans and first responders with crucial support to begin a new chapter.
Building Homes for Heroes originated after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when founder Andy Pujol participated in ground zero search and rescue alongside first responders. The organization has since become one of the nation’s leading veteran support organizations, expanding from a single home donation to an average of more than one home built, gifted, or modified every 10 days.
Today’s milestone home, made possible through a partnership with Hillwood Properties and Highland Homes, goes to Army Specialist Joshua Sager, who served in the Scout Surveillance and Reconnaissance platoon, 3/509th Infantry. Despite enduring severe injuries in a parachute training accident—injuries that doctors initially believed would prevent him from walking again—Specialist Sager showed extraordinary resilience through 18 months of rehabilitation.
“Our 400th home represents a milestone that seemed improbable when we began,” said Andy Pujol, founder and CEO of Building Homes for Heroes. “Each home signifies a fresh start for these courageous service members and their families, and this is just the beginning. We invite everyone to join us as we aim for our 500th home.”
“Supporting organizations like Building Homes for Heroes might seem like a small act, but it has a significant and positive effect on Veterans like Josh and his family,” said Fred Balda, President, Hillwood Communities. “We are delighted to assist Building Homes for Heroes in making this dream a reality for someone who gave so much to protect our freedom.”
The stability of a mortgage-free home is critical for veterans and first responders transitioning to civilian life. This secure environment facilitates physical recovery, improves mental health, and strengthens family stability. Building Homes for Heroes enhances this foundation with emergency funding, financial guidance, wellness programs, and community integration support.
Lowe’s, JPMorgan Chase, PulteGroup, SAIC, and other corporate partners have joined Building Homes for Heroes to expand this mission, creating a nationwide support network for those who have served. In 2024 alone, Building Homes for Heroes is providing more than 40 homes—almost one per week—while broadening its support services to aid over 2,500 veterans and first responders. The organization is now setting its sights on an even more ambitious objective: presenting its 500th home by 2026.
Today’s celebration in Argyle included hundreds of community members, local veterans, first responders, and supporters in a Christmas-themed event, with a parade featuring school marching bands, cheerleaders, motorcycle groups, and local officials, honoring the Sager family and celebrating this organizational milestone in supporting America’s heroes.
