TORONTO, March 21, 2025 – As International Women’s Month puts a spotlight on gender equality, Alfa Laval is acknowledging the significant roles women play in both manufacturing and leadership. Ester Codina, the President of Alfa Laval North America, serves as an example of the progress achieved and the obstacles that women in the sector still face.
Codina says her entry into manufacturing was unplanned, but her leadership is fueled by a strong desire for innovation and a sense of curiosity. “This wasn’t a career I intentionally pursued; it happened organically. My inherent curiosity has driven me to seize opportunities, adapt to diverse cultures, and continuously learn and grow,” she stated.
Under her guidance, Alfa Laval promotes a culture of innovation through its ‘Dare to Try’ initiative, which encourages employees to challenge established norms and discover better methods. She notes, “In a typically conservative industry like manufacturing, it’s essential to actively advocate for change. This involves empowering individuals to contribute new ideas and create a real impact.”
While Codina recognizes the advancements made by women in leadership positions, she also points out that there is still considerable progress to be made. “Although the representation of women has increased, it is not happening quickly enough. Systemic problems still exist, ranging from policies that support work-life balance to deeply rooted stereotypes about careers in manufacturing. We must develop settings where women can truly flourish.”
Alfa Laval is tackling these issues through initiatives focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. These include enhanced healthcare benefits, childcare assistance, and wellness programs, with specific resources for women experiencing menopause. The company’s ‘Women at Alfa Laval’ resource group offers mentorship and networking opportunities to promote a more inclusive workplace.
Throughout her career, Codina has faced obstacles, many of which were unintentional. “Often, the challenges aren’t direct barriers but rather outdated systems. I’ve often been the only woman in meetings and have had to push for flexibility in workplaces designed around different realities. While these barriers might not be deliberate, they are present.”
She advises women aspiring to leadership roles to “Go for it. It will be difficult, but it’s also incredibly fulfilling. Make sure you surround yourself with supportive people who encourage your development.”
Codina anticipates that the future of manufacturing will change with developments in AI, data-driven solutions, and sustainability projects, which will open up new opportunities for women. “The industry is changing, and as more women enter STEM fields, we have a chance to influence the future of manufacturing. The move towards clean energy and smart technology is an exciting time for diverse talent to step up and take the lead.”
For Codina, International Women’s Month is both a celebration and a call to action. “It’s a reminder that while we’ve advanced, we still have work ahead. I hope future generations won’t need to fight to earn their place in leadership; they’ll simply assume it.”
Alfa Laval is still dedicated to building a setting where women can thrive, drive change, and shape the industry’s future.
