Two Afghan teenagers who sought asylum in the U.K. have been imprisoned after pleading guilty to raping a 15-year-old girl in a park, authorities confirmed.
Police reported that the victim was with friends in Leamington, Warwickshire, on May 10 when she encountered Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal.
The girl initially conversed with the pair before they invited her to accompany them on a walk.
They subsequently directed her to a section of parkland called Newbold Comyn, where they carried out the rape, as stated in an online release from Warwickshire Police.
After the assault, the teen was able to signal a member of the public for help, who then alerted the police.
An inquiry was initiated by detectives, utilizing CCTV evidence and pictures the victim had captured on her mobile phone earlier that day.
The two 17-year-olds were identified and taken into custody by officers.
Jahanzeb and Niazal faced rape charges and later confessed to the crime at Coventry Youth Court.
During a sentencing hearing at Warwick Crown Court on Monday, the judge removed anonymity orders that had shielded the defendants’ identities due to their youth.
The court also confirmed that both individuals are asylum seekers.
Jahanzeb was given a custodial sentence of 10 years and eight months, with Niazal receiving nine years and 10 months.
Their sentences will commence in a Young Offenders’ Institution before they are moved to an adult prison later on.
Both were also mandated to register as sex offenders indefinitely and were subjected to lifelong restraining orders.
Detective Chief Inspector Richard Hobbs of the U.K. police commended the victim for her bravery in reporting the crime.
“This was an extremely traumatic event, and the victim has demonstrated immense courage, for which I have the highest praise,” he stated.
He further noted that the inquiry was conducted by specially trained officers who provided support to the victim from the beginning.
“Jahanzeb and Niazal deliberately befriended the victim with the premeditated aim of raping her. Their substantial prison terms mirror the seriousness of their actions and the necessity to safeguard the community from them,” he added.
DCI Hobbs expressed hope that this outcome would give other victims of sexual violence confidence that they will be heard and assisted if they come forward.
“We are committed to conducting every investigation with thoroughness and sensitivity, using all available resources to bring offenders to justice,” he concluded.
