Video captures Mexican legislators in physical altercation, pulling hair and shoving on Congress floor during debate

A physical altercation involving Mexican lawmakers was captured on video Monday, showing them pushing one another and pulling hair on the floor of Congress.

The widely circulated footage depicts members of opposing parties struggling for control of a podium at the front of the chamber. A dispute between the women intensifies from yelling to shoving and finally to grabbing each other’s hair as fellow legislators attempt to step in.

The incident occurred during a debate concerning reforms to Mexico City’s transparency oversight body. Legislators from the right-leaning National Action Party (PAN) were demonstrating against actions by the left-leaning Morena Party, which holds the majority.

The confrontation erupted when PAN representatives maintained their stance at the podium while members of the Morena Party attempted to dislodge them. Following the event, both parties denounced the violence but each attributed the blame to their rivals.

“We took the podium peacefully, without touching anyone, and the decision made by the majority legislative group and its allies was to try and regain control of the board through violence,” PAN aide Andres Atayde stated at a post-incident press conference, as translated by the Economic Times.

“Not only is it vulgar, not only is it aggressive, but it is lamentable that this is the majority governing party for this city,” added PAN lawmaker Daniela Alvarez.

Morena spokesman Paulo Garcia leveled comparable accusations against the conduct of PAN lawmakers.

“What worries us a lot is how the opposition is systematically resorting to violence instead of arguments, in the absence of being able to debate,” Garcia later remarked in an interview with Mexican media.
