HYDERABAD, India and LUDWIGSHAFEN, Germany , Oct. 28, 2024 — BASF and AM Green B.V. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on exploring and developing business opportunities for low-carbon chemicals produced using renewable energy sources in India. This partnership aims to establish sustainable value chains for these chemicals within the Indian market.

Dr. Markus Kamieth, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE, and Mahesh Kolli, Group President of AM Green, formalized the agreement during the Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business 2024 held in New Delhi, India.

As part of the MoU, BASF and AM Green will conduct feasibility studies on low-carbon chemical production in India, including a joint evaluation of promising technologies. This collaboration also encompasses a non-binding letter of intent for BASF to purchase 100,000 tons of ammonia annually from AM Green’s facilities in different locations across India. This ammonia will be produced exclusively using renewable energy sources, including energy from pumped storage projects. It will also meet EU standards for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) as defined in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). Several AM Green facilities have already achieved pre-certification for RFNBO compliance through the CertifHy™ voluntary certification scheme, while pre-certification for other facilities is underway.

“We are dedicated to supporting the sustainable transformation of the industries we serve. We believe that India provides a suitable environment for exploring low-carbon chemical production in partnership with AM Green,” said, Dr. Markus Kamieth, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE.

Mahesh Kolli, Group President of AM Green, stated, “We are excited to collaborate with a global chemical leader like BASF to drive the green transformation within the industry. AM Green’s vision of expanding its capabilities in the downstream value chains of green molecules is central to this partnership with BASF. The AM Green and BASF collaboration aims to serve multiple chemical downstream and associated consumer industries by supplying essential green molecule feedstocks for the production of chemicals, materials, and products in the markets served by BASF.”

About AM Green:

AM Green, established by the founders of the Hyderabad-based Greenko Group, Anil Chalamalasetty and Mahesh Kolli, is a prominent energy transition solutions provider in India. AM Green’s production of green ammonia across multiple locations in India is accelerating its goal of reaching 5 MTPA of green ammonia capacity by 2030. This will support its efforts to achieve net zero targets in both India and OECD markets. This output will be equivalent to approximately 1 MTPA of green hydrogen, representing one-fifth of India’s target for green hydrogen production under the National Green Hydrogen Mission and 10 percent of Europe’s target for green hydrogen imports. AM Green is also developing production capabilities for other green molecules such as green caustic soda, e-methanol, olefins & biofuels to promote decarbonization in industries with challenging emissions reduction goals.
