HONG KONG, July 18, 2025 — China Mobile International Limited (CMI) has officially brought its Southeast Asia–Japan Cable 2 (SJC2) online as of July 16, 2025. This groundbreaking submarine cable system, stretching 10,500 kilometers, is poised to transform internet access throughout the Asia-Pacific area.
The SJC2’s primary route connects Singapore, Hong Kong China, and Japan, while further extensions serve other vital Asia-Pacific nations and territories. Utilizing cutting-edge optical wavelength division multiplexing technology, the cable can transfer data at speeds exceeding 126 terabits per second (Tbps)[i]. SJC2 improves the regional submarine cable infrastructure by providing greater capacity, diverse routing, and enhanced resilience. This is achieved by bolstering network redundancy to satisfy the rising need for connectivity across Southeast Asia and East Asia, thereby fostering a more dependable communication framework for AI and other high-bandwidth applications.

In conjunction with its current submarine cable network, CMI has now created eight pathways across the Asia-Pacific, substantially boosting network uptime and addressing increasing demand for bandwidth. Furthermore, by deploying its proprietary Local Ring Systems in Hong Kong China, Japan, and Singapore, which link to data centers throughout the area, CMI is able to offer tailor-made PoP-to-PoP (Points of Presence) solutions featuring highly adaptable and expandable bandwidth.
Southeast Asia has emerged as one of the globe’s most dynamic digital economies. Data from Market Research Southeast Asia indicates that the digital transformation market in Southeast Asia is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.2% between 2024 and 2032. This transformation is largely fueled by increasing internet penetration. On a wider scale, the Asia-Pacific region’s submarine cable system market is forecast to hit US$18.36 billion by 2034, as reported by Precedence Research. As a result, the necessity for enhanced connectivity infrastructure has become progressively evident.
The SJC2 serves as a fundamental component of CMI’s strategy to bolster global connectivity, especially within the Asia-Pacific, by facilitating the rapid expansion of 5G, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and e-commerce. SJC2 is designed to address this escalating demand by offering enterprises, cloud service providers, and digital platforms with low-latency, high-capacity data transmission crucial for AI workloads and other data-intensive uses, simultaneously advancing digital inclusion and closing connectivity deficits in areas lacking sufficient service.
The SJC2 cable, a collaborative effort by CMI and its associates, represents the most recent submarine cable initiative finalized in the Asia-Pacific region. Its planned integration with the PEACE cable, which went live in September 2024, will allow SJC2 to extend its service footprint into Europe. Over recent years, CMI has channeled investments into various other global cable systems, such as 2Africa, a cross-continental system joining South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe; IAX and IEX, a subsea link connecting Singapore, India, Italy, and France; and SEA-H2X, a Southeast Asia network linking mainland China, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Possessing a network covering 78 countries, more than 100 cable systems, over 168 Tbps of bandwidth, more than 330 global Points of Presence (PoPs), and owned data centers in key urban centers like Hong Kong, Singapore, London, and Frankfurt, alongside 1,278 partner data centers, CMI provides support to collaborators globally.
