SAN DIEGO, March 16, 2026 — In observance of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Fix a Leak Week 2026, California American Water is offering customers straightforward, actionable advice on identifying and repairing common household leaks that waste water, increase utility costs, and put pressure on plumbing systems.

“Detecting and repairing leaks helps our customers safeguard their water supply, protect their homes and businesses, and manage their monthly expenses,” stated Garry Hofer, Vice President of Operations for California American Water. “Simultaneously, California American Water is committing $200 million this year toward upgrading water and wastewater infrastructure throughout our service areas, which includes the replacement of aging pipes.”

Leaks within the home are more frequent than many realize. According to EPA data, roughly one in 10 homes experiences leaks that can result in the loss of over 90 gallons of water daily.

Common areas where leaks typically occur include:

  • Toilets: A faulty flapper valve or plunger ball can lead to water waste by causing the tank to drain and refill continuously. To check for this, place a dye tablet or a small amount of food coloring into the tank and wait five minutes. If colored water appears in the bowl, a leak is likely present, and the damaged component should be replaced.
  • Faucets: A dripping faucet can account for up to 3,200 gallons of wasted water annually. If you find a drip, ensure the handle is closed firmly. If the dripping persists, the washer may require replacement.
  • Washing Machines and Dishwashers: Evidence of water on the floor near these appliances may signal a leak, in which case you should consider contacting a repair technician.
  • Bathtubs and Showers: Inspect showerheads and spouts for any dripping. Faucet handles may need new washers to resolve the issue.
  • Boiler Systems: If you hear the constant sound of running water that does not cycle on and off, a leak may be present. Reach out to a professional to inspect and repair the system.

For more information, customers can download the leak-detection kit from California American Water or read the company’s blog post dedicated to Fix a Leak Week. Additionally, customers can monitor their water usage for unusual spikes and manage their accounts via the MyWater online portal.
