STOCKHOLM, Dec. 13, 2024 — The winner of the 2024 FIA Smart Driving Challenge (FIA SDC) was announced after the live final in Kigali, Rwanda.
Mobilité Club France member Alexandre Stricher secured the win, defeating Thierry Benchetrit in Kigali. His accomplishment involved a 33% CO2 reduction compared to the average driver.*
“I congratulate Alexandre Stricher on his remarkable achievement,” stated FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. “His success demonstrates that every driver can make a positive impact, even on daily commutes. We all share responsibility in creating a more sustainable and safer world.”
Now in its sixth year, the FIA SDC is an annual in-app competition encouraging safer and more sustainable driving practices. The app provides scoring and guidance for improvement, helping drivers make practical changes for better roads.
“I’m thrilled with the challenge’s growth and success throughout the 2024 season,” said Willem Groenewald, FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility. “The rise in participants and the app’s impact on behavior change and emissions reductions are encouraging.”
“Change stems from awareness. By using digital tools to deliver concrete, quantifiable results, we can drive meaningful change in mobility and guide safer driving choices through knowledge.”
This season, drivers from 92 countries participated. They collectively achieved a 9% reduction in CO2 emissions or battery usage compared to the average driver.
Greater Than, a leading provider of road safety and climate impact risk intelligence, provides AI scoring for the app.
“Transport is vital but significantly contributes to global emissions. The FIA SDC shows that everyday drivers can lessen their environmental impact with minimal effort; collectively, this creates substantial change,” said Johanna Forseke, Chief Business Officer and Deputy CEO at Greater Than. “Congratulations to the winner, runner-up, and all participants who utilize the FIA SDC to understand the link between driving behavior and climate impact.”
Winner Alexandre Stricher has secured the title four times, including in Kigali, Rwanda.
“I’m passionate about environmental improvements, and this is a fun way to make a difference,” said Alexandre. “I encourage everyone to join the FIA SDC to see how easily they can reduce the impact of daily commutes.”
The 2024 FIA SDC final, supported by numerous FIA Member Clubs since its inception, was hosted by the FIA Member Club Rwanda Automobile Club during the FIA General Assemblies week in Kigali. It’s part of a broader FIA sustainability program, including a Sustainable Innovation Series conference and a session on the FIA’s 2025 sustainability goals.
*The percentage of battery usage or CO2 emissions savings is calculated using Greater Than’s AI technology. Trip data is analyzed and converted into a unique DriverDNA profile, compared to a database of over 7 billion DriverDNA profiles to assess CO2 savings.
