STOCKHOLM, July 18, 2025 — On October 25, Boliden, in collaboration with the global mining and metals organization ICMM and the learning and development firm BecomingX, will host the world’s deepest marathon within the Garpenberg zinc mine. This event, set to be run 1,120 meters beneath sea level, aims to generate 1 million USD for charitable causes.

While regular operations continue, approximately 60 participants will undertake the full marathon distance of 42.195 km, along a course that will be partly illuminated. These participants, representing both the mining and metals industry and civil society, originate from at least 15 different countries and possess considerable running experience. Boliden implemented an internal process that allowed employees from all group units to participate. However, due to spatial constraints, the general public cannot take part in the event.

In conjunction with the marathon, the objective is to register two world records with Guinness World Records. Firstly, a new world record will be established for the deepest marathon ever completed, and secondly, a world record will be set for organizing such an event.
