British guest Jay Ian Birbeck toured the smart vehicle area at the third China International Supply Chain Expo, an event highlighting the vast scope of the worldwide supply chain, held in Beijing from July 16 to 20.
At the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) stand, Jay positioned himself in an advanced F4 single-seater next to a specially designed rally car. This exhibit signifies the FIA’s initial participation at the supply chain expo, aiming “to connect with people, to connect with companies,” as stated by Habib Turki, FIA’s chief development officer.
A key aspect of the visit was the AITO 9, a premium SUV that has surpassed rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X5 in sales within China this year. Upon entering the driver’s seat, Jay found its comfort “remarkable.” In the rear cabin, he showcased a reclining seat that “becomes an actual bed,” complete with an automated projection screen. Kang Bo, Vice President of SERES Group, attributed the AITO 9’s success, during the interview, to its sophisticated driver assistance system and safety elements, also extending gratitude to exceptional suppliers such as CATL.
Jay investigated the comprehensive battery supply chain featured at the expo. At the CATL stand, he viewed a presentation by a CATL supplier showcasing the Shenxing superfast charging battery, an all-electric module offering an 800-kilometer range on a single charge and a five-minute rapid charge for 520 kilometers of travel. He then inspected a sodium-ion cell, developed from common table salt, which guarantees consistent operation at temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius and requires “just 100 grams of salt” per standard cell.
Within the upstream supply chain section, prominently featuring partners of battery manufacturer CATL, Jay visited exhibits managed by Juneng Power, a supplier of battery casings and covers; Anhui Shengjie, a developer of specialty chemicals; and Yunshang New Energy, a provider of testing systems. He also observed an electric fishing yacht by CETL and an electric aircraft on the exhibition floor, highlighting the industry’s vision for land, sea, and air electrification.
Jay concluded his visit at the XPENG Motors stand, where Vice President Vivian Chen elaborated on their “Tech for Good” philosophy. She drew attention to detachable flying vehicles and AI-driven robots crafted for “more humanistic care.”
“Chinese automotive manufacturers are making a significant global impact,” Jay summarized, reflecting on how the expo combines advanced technology, competitive pricing, and transformative mobility solutions to reshape the future of transportation.
