University of Tulsa Sets Record with 11 Gilman International Scholarship Winners

TULSA, Okla., Jan. 9, 2026 — The University of Tulsa’s Center for Global Engagement has revealed that 11 students have earned a total of $34,500 in grants from the competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. This represents a record number of winners for UTulsa, signifying a major accomplishment for the students and offering vital funding for their overseas academic pursuits.

The 11 UTulsa students were awarded a combined $34,500 in grants to support their academic endeavors abroad.

The scholarship winners will engage in a variety of international study experiences. Seven students secured funding for travel courses, while four others were granted awards for semester, summer, or year-long programs.

Beyond the standard scholarship, two students were given extra awards for studies in critical world regions and disciplines:

  • One student was granted the Gilman-STEM Supplemental Award for studies in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
  • One student received the Gilman-DAAD Supplemental Award, a collaboration with the German Academic Exchange Service.

“Receiving this scholarship is a tremendous honor and a powerful validation of my dedication to my academic and personal development. It signifies both an acknowledgment of my potential and the confidence others have in me to fully benefit from this opportunity,” stated awardee Andrea Taylor, a Tulsa sophomore majoring in Spanish and biochemistry who will study in Spain. “Studying abroad allows me to broaden my worldview in ways a classroom cannot. It enables me to dive into a different culture, push myself in new settings, and cultivate independence, flexibility, and a global mindset.”

Additional scholarship recipients include:

  • Oswaldo Atilano, a nursing junior from Tulsa, who will study in Peru
  • Angel Gutierrez, an international engineering and language student from Mounds, who is headed to Thailand
  • Kasra Iranpour, a mechanical engineering junior from Edmond, who will study in Belgium and the Netherlands
  • Michelle Jones, a music senior from Broken Arrow, who will study in Italy
  • Vung Kop, a business information systems junior from Jenks, who will study in India
  • Aiva P. Liman, a cybersecurity sophomore from Houston, who will study in China
  • Jennifer Luna, a psychology senior from Jenks, who will study in China and Japan
  • Bristie Rahman, a cybersecurity senior from Sapulpa, who will study in China
  • Harrison Schwichtenberg, a biology senior from Tulsa, who will study in Thailand
  • Alexis Watson, an international science and language student from Wichita, Kansas, who is headed to Germany
