French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot informed France Inter radio that the issue will be brought up during a meeting with the foreign ministers of Germany and Poland.

Barrot stated, “We intend to take action, but we wish to do so in conjunction with our [allies].”

A German government source also told Reuters that Germany is “intimately collaborating with other European nations and Denmark on the subsequent measures concerning Greenland.”

The White House announced on Tuesday that President [Trump] considers acquiring Greenland a national security priority and that the use of the U.S. military remains a possibility as his administration assesses how to pursue control of the Arctic territory.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement, “President Trump has made it clear that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority for the United States.”

She further added, “The President and his team are deliberating various options to achieve this significant foreign policy objective, and naturally, [military action] is always an option available to the Commander in Chief.”

When questioned on Wednesday about the Reuters report, the White House directed Digital to Leavitt’s statements.

Over the weekend, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that the U.S. needs Greenland, a Danish territory, for “national security.”

European and Nordic leaders opposed these remarks, with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, and Denmark’s Ambassador to the United States Jesper Møller Sørensen emphasizing their support for Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland and asserting that its future must be decided solely by Greenland and Denmark.

A senior European official informed Reuters on Wednesday that Denmark must take the lead in any endeavor to coordinate a response, and “the Danes have not yet communicated to their European allies the specific kind of concrete support they desire.”

Digital’s Jasmine Baehr and Ashley Carnahan contributed to this report.
