Israel Identifies Two of Four Deceased Hostages Returned by Hamas, Reveals Causes of Death

The identities of two of the four deceased hostages, whose remains were handed over by Hamas via the Red Cross on Monday, along with their causes of death, have been disclosed.

On Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that its representatives had notified the families of Guy Iluz, Bipin Joshi, and two other deceased individuals, whose names are not yet authorized for public release by their families, that their loved ones’ bodies had been returned for interment.

IDF intelligence suggests that Iluz was taken captive alive after escaping the Nova music festival and subsequently sustained injuries. He later died from these wounds due to the absence of appropriate medical care, the IDF reported. Iluz was 26 years old at the time of his demise.

Joshi, as per the IDF, was abducted from a bomb shelter at Kibbutz Alumim. An evaluation by the IDF indicated that Joshi was killed during his captivity within the first few months of the conflict. He was 23 years old.

The IDF stated that definitive conclusions would be reached following the completion of examinations by the National Center of Forensic Medicine. The identities of the other two deceased captives have not yet been made public.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum released a statement saying, “The families of the hostages and the returned extend their embrace to the families of Guy Illouz and Bipin Joshi, alongside two additional families whose loved ones were recently brought back for proper interment.”

The forum further stated, “Alongside the grief and the understanding that their hearts will never be whole, the return of Guy and Bipin, may their memories be a blessing, together with two additional deceased hostages, brings some measure of comfort to families who have lived with agonizing uncertainty and doubt for over two years. We will not rest until all 24 hostages are brought home.”

Monday saw the release of the final 20 living hostages, who had been held captive for more than two years. Besides the living captives, Hamas was slated to return the remains of 28 deceased hostages by Monday, though the group reportedly expressed difficulty in locating all the bodies.

The IDF affirmed that it “continues to make every effort to return all the hostages, as Hamas is required to fulfill its part of the agreement and make the necessary efforts to return all the hostages to their families for proper burial.”

The remains of 24 deceased hostages, potentially including U.S. citizens Itay Chen and Omer Neutera, remain unreturned.
