NATO member blames Russian intelligence for railway line ‘sabotage’

A spokesperson for Poland’s special services minister on Tuesday accused Russian intelligence of orchestrating a railway explosion that destroyed a critical track on a route essential for delivering aid to Ukraine.

Jacek Dobrzyński stated that “everything indicates” Russian intelligence was responsible for the sabotage targeting Polish railways.

“The fact is that all evidence suggests this — what we can already confidently term a terrorist attack — was initiated by special services from the East,” Dobrzyński commented.

An explosion severely damaged a section of track on the Warsaw-Lublin railway line, while another stretch further south also sustained damage, both incidents now being investigated by authorities as potential acts of sabotage.

Dobrzyński confirmed that investigations into both incidents remained ongoing. “I cannot disclose the current stage of the officers’ work, what they are presently focusing on, or which lines of inquiry they are linking or analysing,” he explained.

“Russian services would be extremely keen to obtain this information: the precise location of our officers or the direction their investigation is progressing,” he noted.

The explosion on the Warsaw-Lublin line was described as an “unprecedented act of sabotage.”

“The explosion of an explosive device destroyed the railway track. Emergency services and the prosecutor’s office are working at the scene. On the same route, closer to Lublin, damage has also been identified,” was posted on X, with a vow to find the perpetrators.

The government’s National Security Committee convened on Tuesday, with military commanders, intelligence chiefs, and the president’s representative present, to discuss these incidents.

Poland’s accusation comes in the context of Eastern Europe, following airspace incursions in September that involved Russian drones entering Polish territory and three MiG-31 fighter jets crossing into Estonian airspace before being intercepted by NATO aircraft.
