A report claims that 100 individuals lost their lives during a U.S. operation to apprehend President Nicolás Maduro.
According to Reuters, Venezuela’s interior minister, Diosdado Cabello, disclosed the death toll late Wednesday, noting that the Venezuelan army had published a list of 23 deceased soldiers.
The nation’s ruling Communist Party also verified on Tuesday that fatalities occurred during the U.S. military action over the weekend.
Fox Digital has contacted the State Department for a statement.
Reuters also reported that Cabello stated Maduro sustained a leg wound during the capture, while another official suffered a head injury.
It was further added that Venezuela’s interim President, Delcy Rodriguez, has proclaimed a week of mourning for the fallen military personnel.
An administration official informed Fox Digital on Tuesday that a number of U.S. service members were wounded in the operation.
Five of those individuals have since resumed their duties, while two others continue to recuperate.
“They are receiving excellent medical care and are well on their way to recovery,” the official stated. “The fact that this extremely complex and grueling mission was successfully executed with so few injuries is a testament to the expertise of our joint warriors.”
On Saturday, U.S. troops arrived in Caracas, Venezuela, as part of a covert mission, designated Operation Absolute Resolve, aimed at capturing Maduro and his wife. The mission was under the command of the Army’s Delta Force.
According to a Cuban government statement, the 32 military and police officers that Cuba asserts were killed were participating in a mission conducted at the request of Venezuela’s government. Cuba released the names, ranks, and ages of the deceased on Tuesday.
“Victims of a new criminal act of aggression and state terrorism perpetrated against the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela by the United States, 32 Cubans lost their lives in combat actions and after fierce resistance,” read a statement published by Granma, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.
