LUND, Sweden, March 19, 2025 — Alfa Laval has secured its inaugural contract for the FCM Ammonia, an ammonia fuel supply system. This achievement solidifies Alfa Laval’s leading position in creating solutions to decarbonize the maritime sector. The ammonia fuel supply system will be integrated into seven dual-fuel LPG/ammonia carriers for Tianjin Southwest Maritime.
With projections indicating a more than twofold increase in international shipping by 2050, the adoption of low-carbon fuels is essential for the maritime industry to achieve net-zero emissions. Ammonia is recognized as a promising low-carbon fuel and is seeing considerable progress and rising demand.
Alfa Laval plays a key role in offering complete fuel solutions to meet the changing demands of the maritime industry. The ammonia fuel supply system is a further addition to a range of solutions designed to accelerate the industry’s decarbonization efforts. Alfa Laval has secured the first contract for its ammonia fuel supply system, demonstrating its technological preparedness to manage ammonia as a fuel, as one of the industry’s pioneers.
According to Peter Sahlen, Head of Marine Separation, Fuel Supply System & Heat Transfer at Alfa Laval, “We are developing the necessary solutions for a safe and efficient transition to low-carbon alternative fuels through research, product development, and strategic partnerships. Our extensive experience with fuels such as methanol and LPG has provided us with a significant advantage with ammonia, and this initial contract confirms our dedication to promoting decarbonization in shipping using dependable and cutting-edge solutions.”
The FCM Ammonia system will be installed at the CSSC Huangpu Wenchong shipyard in China for shipowner Tianjin Southwest Maritime (TSM). The first installation will be on three 25,000 cubic meter LPG/ammonia carriers, followed by four 41,000 cubic meter LPG/ammonia carriers. The first FCM Ammonia unit for TSM is scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2025.
