GUANGZHOU, China, Feb. 14, 2025News report from GDToday. A photography exhibit, “Nihao, China! See You in Guangdong,” recently concluded in Orange County, California (January 23 – February 12). The show highlighted the diverse culture of Guangdong Province, China, through the work of four acclaimed American photojournalists: Pulitzer Prize winners Nick Ut, Ringo Chiu, Irfan Khan, and World Press Photo award recipient Michael Nelson.

The exhibition featured 48 photographs from the photographers’ trip to Guangdong in November 2024, a visit arranged by GDToday. The images captured the province’s varied landscapes, rich heritage, cultural traditions, and daily life. Displayed at South Coast Plaza, the largest shopping mall on the US West Coast, the exhibit attracted an estimated 500,000 visitors and extensive media coverage (over 10 outlets, more than 30 news reports).

“This project aims to foster greater cross-cultural understanding, particularly providing Americans with a glimpse into Chinese culture,” explained Irfan Khan, who was surprised by the warmth and openness of the Chinese people he encountered.

Wang Taiyu, Cultural Counselor at the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles, believes the exhibition will deepen American understanding of China, its people, and its progress.

Robert LaBounty, representing the Orange County Board of Supervisors, praised the photographs for their contribution to cultural understanding and community diversity in Orange County.

Visitor Mona Sherif discovered a far more diverse Chinese culture than she had anticipated. “We often associate China with its Great Wall and historical landmarks, but this exhibit provided a relatable, everyday perspective, immersing me in the culture and feeling like I’d shared the joy of their celebrations,” she shared.

After its US run, the exhibition will travel to Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, from February 15 to 24.
