LOS ANGELES, Nov. 28, 2024 — President Joe Biden remarked to a White House audience on Monday, “They tell me there’s 2,500 people here looking for a pardon.” This statement, however, didn’t precede any actual pardons. Instead, it was a prelude to the President’s ceremonial pardoning of two turkeys, a symbolic act highlighting their impending confinement.
On November 20th, sixty members of Congress submitted a letter to President Biden urging him to exercise his clemency powers. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) stated at a Capitol Hill press conference, “So many people who are serving extensive sentences today are there because of crimes that are victimless. That is astonishing, and it should be dealt with.”
President Biden responded to the turkeys, not Congress, saying, “Based on your temperament and your commitment to being productive members of society, I hereby pardon Peach and Blossom.”
Edwin Rubis has served 27 years of a 40-year federal sentence for non-violent cannabis trafficking offenses from the late 1990s. Maintaining good behavior, Rubis has earned three college degrees and completed over 30 rehabilitation programs in prison. He aims for a counseling career upon release.
Edwin Rubis and many others like him seek commutation—individuals committed to contributing positively to society. It’s time for President Biden to address human rights and mass incarceration seriously. It’s time to free Edwin Rubis.
