BEIJING, Dec. 5, 2024 — The annual taro price index analysis was unveiled at the 2024 Boao Forum for Entrepreneurs on Monday. This report is crucial for digitally integrating the taro industry with finance and technology, thereby promoting high-quality growth within the taro sector of Hezhou, located in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China.

Hezhou has employed industrialization and innovation to cultivate its traditional taro industry, transforming taro into a key driver of economic revitalization in the consumer market.

“Hezhou is a leading region in China for continuous taro cultivation and boasts major processing clusters in Babu and Pinggui Districts. Our products enjoy global distribution,” stated Quan Changwen, director of Hezhou’s municipal bureau of agriculture and rural affairs.

Hezhou cultivates taro across more than 170,000 mu (approximately 11,333 hectares). The city supports 31 taro processing companies with a combined annual capacity exceeding 270,000 tonnes. Leveraging overseas warehouses and cross-border e-commerce, Hezhou’s taro is exported to Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America. In 2023, the city exported 1,670 tonnes of taro, valued at 31.5 million yuan (approximately 4.32 million U.S. dollars).

The agricultural product price index, which merges the digital economy with agriculture and forestry, has become a key driver for many regions in advancing market-oriented economic reforms, strengthening brand recognition, and fostering sustainable industrial growth. The launch of the taro price index significantly aids in upgrading Hezhou’s industrial ecosystem, establishing the Hezhou Taro brand, and enhancing its pricing influence.

Furthermore, the price index release will provide comprehensive market insights and data-driven guidance for the taro industry, while simultaneously boosting the market presence of Hezhou Taro, according to industry experts.
