STOCKHOLM, March 18, 2025 — At the Garpenberg mine, a paste consisting of tailings and a binder is used for backfilling. This technique stabilizes the rock, maximizes ore tonnage, and minimizes tailings disposal needs. Boliden is investing SEK 750 m in a new paste facility as part of its plan to increase production at Garpenberg from 3.5 to 4.5 million tonnes annually.
Stefan Romedahl, President of Business Area Mines, stated that the conditions for developing the world-class Garpenberg deposit are exceptional. He views this investment as an initial step, providing flexibility for optimizing production in both the short and long term.
Extensive exploration at Garpenberg has resulted in substantial Mineral Reserves and Mineral Resources. Studies have been conducted to determine the optimal development strategy. As a preliminary measure, a permit application has been submitted to increase production to 4.5 Mtonnes. Concurrently, a decision has been made to replace an existing paste facility while boosting production capacity. The total investment of SEK 750 m will fund a new plant located adjacent to the current one to minimize disruptions and additional infrastructure costs. Most of the investment is slated for completion in 2026.
Reaching a production rate of 4.5 Mtonnes per year will necessitate further improvements, including mine production development, underground infrastructure, ore transportation enhancements, and concentrator debottlenecking. Subject to permit approval for the production increase, a phased increase beyond the current licensed level of 3.5 million tons is anticipated.
Parallel concept studies are ongoing to assess the potential for future production increases, contingent on expansions in mine production, hoisting capabilities, processing capacity, and tailings facilities.
