SYDNEY, May 2, 2025 — Since 2016, Booking.com has been researching consumer attitudes towards sustainable travel, surveying almost 230,000 travellers across 35 markets. Today, Booking.com has published the 10th edition of its yearly study, which examines consumer opinions and intentions regarding the social and environmental consequences of travel:
Booking.com’s latest research focuses on communities. It explores not only how people travel but also their experiences with incoming tourists in their own communities. This method highlights both the advantages and disadvantages of tourism from the perspectives of travellers and residents.
- For the first time, over half (51%) of Australian travellers are mindful of the impact of tourism on local communities and the environment.
- In 2016, less than 40% of Australian travellers considered their travel habits sustainable. By 2025, nearly all travellers (91%) express a desire to make more sustainable travel decisions.
- While 62% of Australian travellers believe tourism generally benefits their communities, they also point out issues like traffic, litter, overcrowding, and increasing living costs.
- Australians are showing increased dedication to supporting the economies of their destination, with 77% wanting their spending to benefit local communities and 73% aiming to leave places in better condition than they found them.
“To ensure destinations remain enjoyable for both residents and visitors, tourism, infrastructure, and innovation must advance in line with travellers’ positive intentions,” says Todd Lacey, Regional Manager, Oceania at Booking.com.
“Our goal is to simplify the process for travellers to engage with a wider array of local communities throughout Australia, from remote areas to Indigenous tourism operators, thereby helping to distribute the advantages of tourism more evenly.”
