OTTAWA, ON, June 20, 2025 – The CBSA has temporarily suspended deportations to Israel due to the unstable and unpredictable circumstances there, resulting from the ongoing conflict with Iran.
This temporary suspension, officially termed an Administrative Deferral of Removals (ADR), is enacted in accordance with paragraph 230(1)(c) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations. It applies to countries deemed unsafe due to factors such as environmental catastrophes or widespread violence. Currently, there are 16 ADRs in effect for various nations worldwide, including one for Iran, which was implemented on November 14, 2022.
This ADR does not apply to individuals deemed inadmissible to Canada due to criminal activity, serious criminality, violations of international or human rights, involvement in organized crime, or security concerns.
Once the situation in Israel stabilizes and the general risk to the civilian population is no longer present, the ADR will be revoked. At that point, the CBSA will resume deportations of individuals who are inadmissible to Canada and subject to an enforceable removal order.
Quick Facts
- The CBSA is legally obligated to remove inadmissible individuals as quickly as possible. Every person facing removal from Canada is guaranteed due process under the law. Once all legal avenues of appeal have been exhausted, individuals are expected to depart Canada or face deportation.
