OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 29, 2024 – Suicide’s impact extends far beyond the individual, causing devastating consequences for families and communities. Our government ensures Canadians have access to readily available suicide prevention resources and support.

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the nationwide launch of the 9-8-8 helpline.

For the past year, Canadians have had access to culturally sensitive and trauma-informed suicide prevention and emotional support services, regardless of location.

Since its launch, 9-8-8 responders have handled over 300,000 calls and texts. This extensive network of trained professionals has provided compassionate, non-judgmental support to those in need.

National, provincial, territorial, and local partners, along with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, form the core of Canada’s federal 9-8-8 service delivery. They assist individuals during crises, help ensure safety, and offer vital connections when most needed.

By working together, we can strengthen suicide prevention efforts, reducing fatalities and ensuring individuals and communities receive the support they require.

If you’re considering suicide or concerned about someone who is, call or text 9-8-8 for 24/7 support. Remember, you’re not alone; help is readily available.

The Honourable Ya’ara Saks, P.C., M.P.
