(SeaPRwire) –   As a leader in the canned seafood industry, Chicken of the Sea advances its sustainability initiatives through MSC Certification

PITTSBURGH, May 2, 2026 — In celebration of World Tuna Day, Chicken of the Sea International, a subsidiary of Thai Union Group, has committed that all retail tuna products under the Chicken of the Sea brand will attain Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Certification by year-end. This makes Chicken of the Sea the first among the three major mainstream U.S. tuna brands to achieve 100% MSC certification and display the MSC blue fish ecolabel on every item in its retail lineup.

Chicken of the Sea products to receive MSC Certification by end of 2026

The MSC Certification confirms that the tuna in every Chicken of the Sea product originates from fisheries that meet the following criteria:

  • Environmentally sustainable fishing practices supported by healthy tuna populations
  • Minimal impact on the environment and marine ecosystems
  • Robust fishery management systems

“This certification is not merely a marketing label—it represents genuine responsibility,” said Andy Mecs, President of Chicken of the Sea International. “By the end of this year, every can and pouch we produce will carry the assurance that our tuna comes from a sustainably managed fishery and contributes to healthier oceans. We appreciate the Marine Stewardship Council’s rigorous standards and collaborative efforts that have made this milestone possible.”

Scope of Certification & Global Significance

For over a decade, Chicken of the Sea’s parent company, Thai Union, has invested in tuna fishery improvement projects. This includes extensive collaboration with fishing industry experts, vessel operators, and government officials to enhance fishery performance and prepare them for successful MSC assessments. Thai Union’s sustainability work spans approximately 10% of global tuna catches. Years of partnership and dedication to environmental stewardship have enabled Chicken of the Sea to achieve full MSC certification across its product range.

This achievement also supports Chicken of the Sea’s role in advancing Thai Union’s SeaChange 2030 initiative—a comprehensive effort to transform sustainability practices within the seafood sector by 2030, while promoting ocean health and strengthening coastal communities.

“We are proud to collaborate with Chicken of the Sea as they lead by example in both their category and the broader seafood industry. Today’s announcement marks a significant milestone—delivering more MSC-certified, sustainable tuna to consumers throughout the United States. This commitment highlights the vital role of fisheries and businesses worldwide that prioritize sustainability, ensuring thriving oceans and seafood supplies for future generations,” stated Laura McDearis, U.S. Program Director at the Marine Stewardship Council.
